"National Significance" . . . .

So how's that "Drill Baby! Drill!" thingey working out for ya?

(Reuters) - A huge oil spill will hit the southern coast on Friday, the Coast Guard said on Thursday, and the military offered to help BP Plc contain the slick that threatens four states.

The spill was "of national significance," Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, told a news conference, adding the government will push BP to conduct the strongest possible effort to clean it up.

The state of Louisiana declared a state of emergency due to the accident, which the Coast Guard said late on Wednesday was spilling five times more oil than previously estimated.

I can think of something else that should be an issue of "national significance." Weaning this country off of oil and beginning a serious, concerted effort to formulate and implement a national energy strategy that focuses on renewable energy sources.

I'm not expecting our cowardly political leaders to do much about it though - at least not as long as oil, gas and coal industry cash continues to be pumped into their bloated campaign war chests and the revolving door of politicians becoming lobbyists for those same industries continues to spin unabated.

It's nearly official: Gov. Charlie Crist (R-FL) will bolt the GOP and run for Senate as an independent, the St. Petersburg Times and Fox News each report. This much-expected event will drastically shake up a top Senate race in this perennial swing state, which has become more intriguing than anybody could have imagined a year ago.

The St. Petersburg Times reports that Crist has notified key financial backers of his decision. Crist has already announced that he will make his as-yet undisclosed decision official tomorrow, one day before the April 30 filing deadline.

It's just a matter of time before all that remains of the party of Lincoln will be Teabaggers, Birthers, John Birchers, war loving Neo-cons, Christian-Taliban end timers, secessionists, racists and gun goons.

Actually, now that I've pondered it for all of 5 seconds, they may have reached that nadir of political and cultural irrelevancy already.

nAZi by any other name . . .

I've been holding off on commenting on the controversial Arizona immigration law issue simply because the magnitude of what it's all about has overwhelmed my sense of pride in what I thought America stood for and my sense of respect and empathy for alot of people who incrementally I am beginning to feel shame for calling my fellow citizens.

Let me start with a few factual observations.

The illegal immigration issue in the United States southwest, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas is not a new issue. These states have shared a border with our poorer neighbor Mexico for their entire history. It is a 1700+ mile long border across and through some of the most inhospitable and uninhabited terrain there is. It is literally impossible to monitor every square inch of that expansive border in perpetuity. And for those who believe building an end-to-end Berlin Wall type of fence is a feasible, effective option, all I have to say to you is you are a hideously uninformed ignoramus.

Secondly - it is estimated there are approximately 500,000 illegal immigrants in the state of Arizona at this time. Statistics I have seen do not indicate an immeasurable increase in that number in the past 5 years. In fact, recent trending shows a slowdown and potential reversal in the numbers due quite simply to the impact of the economic downturn and busted housing market in the southwest.

Thirdly - the LEGAL hispanic population has been increasing steadily the past two decades. This demographic transformation has slowly seen traditionally white, conservative and Republican Arizona slowly shifting from deep red to, at some point in the not too distant future, a blue political status - particularly in federal elections. Hispanics, like most other minorities, do not see a modern day Republican party that gives a rat's ass about their issues, so they tend to vote Democratic by a comfortable majority.

Are you starting to get the picture now?

So given the reality that illegal immigration is not a new problem, is not an escalating problem and has a by product which will hasten the future demise of of the conservative and GOP stranglehold on the Arizona state political machine, the impetus behind the "show me your papers" immigration law begins to crystallize quite clearly.

What's that? Still don't understand the relationships outlined above? Ok -- let me throw one more factor into the mix.

A black man was elected President 16 months ago. Do you get it now?

Still not convinced huh? Sigh . . . ok -- I didn't want to do this, but you've forced my hand.

Arizona state Senator Russel Pearce, who authored the draconian immigration law and marshaled it forward to the desk of (non-elected, she was appointed when Democrat Janet Napolitano joined Obama's cabinet) GOP Governor Jan Brewer for her signature, has a wee bit of an issue with humans whose skin color is so much as a half shade darker than his own. You see -- the unadulterated fact of the matter is that Sen. Pearce is actually quite chummy with some folks who like to parade around in Nazi brown-shirt uniforms while wearing prominently displayed Nazi Swastika armbands and waving Nazi flags. Combine that sordid bit of business with the fact that while Sen. Pearce's "show me your papers if you have brown skin" law was snaking it's way through the Arizona legislature, a companion bill was slithering along side it. This bill has as a primary aim, a requirement for Barack Obama to prove he is a natural born citizen.

You really have to be a fucking moron to not see what this Arizona immigration bill is really all about. And it IS NOT to say in any sense that an illegal immigration problem does not exist in the United States. George W. Bush attempted, to his credit, to fairly address the issue while he was President, but the hard-core conservatives - the same unreasonable fuckheads responsible for the Arizona law, slapped him down.

It's a sad spectacle, but when you get right down to it, something I and many others have been predicting and warning about for quite some time is finally coming to fruition. The Birther, Racist, Teabagger, Christian-Taliban, Xenophobic, fascist nutcases are in the final throes of solidifying their grip of control on the once proud and sane Republican party.

Time will tell whether these goose-stepping assholes will regret the damage they have wrought to the world's greatest democracy. My fervent hope is not only will they come to regret it, but that they and their lizard-brain movement will once and for all be consigned to the dustbin of history.

All the more reason to bust up the health insurance industry's grotesque little monopoly, send their sleazy, multi-millionaire CEO's packing and once and for all implement a single payer national health care system -- which is what every fucking other civilized, industrialized country on the face of planet has already been doing for years.

(Reuters) - One after another, shortly after a diagnosis of breast cancer, each of the women learned that her health insurance had been canceled. First there was Yenny Hsu, who lived and worked in Los Angeles. Later, Robin Beaton, a registered nurse from Texas. And then, most recently, there was Patricia Relling, a successful art gallery owner and interior designer from Louisville, Kentucky.

None of the women knew about the others. But besides their similar narratives, they had something else in common: Their health insurance carriers were subsidiaries of WellPoint, which has 33.7 million policyholders -- more than any other health insurance company in the United States.

The women all paid their premiums on time. Before they fell ill, none had any problems with their insurance. Initially, they believed their policies had been canceled by mistake.

They had no idea that WellPoint was using a computer algorithm that automatically targeted them and every other policyholder recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The software triggered an immediate fraud investigation, as the company searched for some pretext to drop their policies, according to government regulators and investigators.

Once the women were singled out, they say, the insurer then canceled their policies based on either erroneous or flimsy information. WellPoint declined to comment on the women's specific cases without a signed waiver from them, citing privacy laws.

There you go Sarah Palin --- there's your true fucking death panels --- greedy insurance industry executives and their penny counting computer algorithm programs.

I beg any one of my Tea Party friends to defend these horrible pricks and their greed based health delivery system. Begging!!

Last month, AFA bloggers wrote that federal employees “can be shot” for passing health reform, which they termed a “MussoliniCare bill.” While the views of the AFA are certainly fringe, the influence AFA enjoys within the Republican Party is widespread. During the health reform debate, Republican lawmakers joined with AFA representatives for a “Prayercast” to kill the bill. Top Republican legislators, from both the House and Senate, often appear on AFA affiliated radio to attack President Obama and concoct conspiracies about his agenda.

Yeah --- because that's what Jesus would do you know --- put a bullet in someone's head as punishment for voting for Health Care Reform.

The American Family Association wingnuts truly are no different or any better than the Taliban and quite frankly, as long as the Republican party considers them a legitimate voting bloc and an integral segment of their political base - all the more reason to keep the Democrats in power (as lame-ass as they may be).

If you are going to go out and publicly proclaim your political views for or against this issue or that issue and/or rail against a certain politician -- at least have the courtesy to actually know what the fuck it is you stand for and have a semblance of capability to support your statements with coherent facts culled from a learned knowledge of the subject at hand. 'Tain't' dat a shame . . . .

At the House hearing, state Rep. Ed Setzler (R-Kennesaw), who is shouldering the legislation in the House, spoke earnestly for better than a half hour on microchips as a literal invasion of privacy.

He was followed by a hefty woman who described herself as a resident of DeKalb County. “I’m also one of the people in Georgia who has a microchip,” the woman said. Slowly, she began to lead the assembled lawmakers down a path they didn’t want to take.

Microchips, the woman began, “infringe on issues that are fundamental to our very existence. Our rights to privacy, our rights to bodily integrity, the right to say no to foreign objects being put in our body.”

She spoke of the “right to work without being tortured by co-workers who are activating these microchips by using their cell phones and other electronic devices.”

She continued. “Microchips are like little beepers. Just imagine, if you will, having a beeper in your rectum or genital area, the most sensitive area of your body. And your beeper numbers displayed on billboards throughout the city. All done without your permission,” she said.

It was not funny, and no one laughed.

“Ma’am, did you say you have a microchip?” asked state Rep. Tom Weldon (R-Ringgold).

“Yes, I do. This microchip was put in my vaginal-rectum area,” she replied. Setzler, the sponsoring lawmaker, sat next to the witness – his head bowed.

“You’re saying this was involuntary?” Weldon continued.

The woman said she had been pushing a court case through the system for the last eight years to have the device removed.

Wendell Willard (R-Atlanta), chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, picked up the questioning.

“Who implanted this in you?” he asked.

“Researchers with the federal government,” she said.

“And who in the federal government implanted it?” Willard asked.

“The Department of Defense.”

“Thank you, ma’am.”

This is the unsurprising sum result of allowing the Glenn Becks of the world to dominate the public discourse and the public airwaves.

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday charged Goldman Sachs Group Inc. with defrauding investors, alleging that Goldman let a big hedge fund fill a financial product with risky subprime mortgages and then failed to disclose that to the product's buyers.

The SEC said in the civil complaint that Goldman and Fabrice Tourre, then vice president, created and sold opaque collateralized-debt obligations, or CDOs, that hinged on the performance of subprime-mortgage-backed securities.

I'd really like the Tea Party folks to coherently explain that one to me.

If any single group of people bears the brunt of blame for the economic meltdown in this country it's the big Bankers and the Wall Street thieves. But the GOP doesn't want to look into their ponzi scheming and most certainly do not want to force the white collar con artists to change their way of doing business in an effort to curb abuses and fraud.

After closely observing the Tea Party movement since their inauspicious conception within weeks of Obama's inauguration, I get the distinct feeling that they are much more interested in Obama's birth certificate than they are in holding accountable the suit and tie institutional criminals who have financially ass-raped this country this past decade and set America's economic progress back 40 years.

And that's why I mock them and will continue to mock them. Running around with "Obama is Hitler" signs isn't going deter the next sleazy hedge-fund operator from looting your company, city or county pension fund or decimating your 401k. In fact -- those guys love that buffoonery -- it keeps the media attention riveted on the absurd instead of the crime deeds being perpetrated in the name of free market capitalism.
